The Diary of a good neighbour - Diario de una buena vecina (Doris Lessing)

A good neighbour is somebody hired by the Town council to visit aged people and check they are not ill, they are taking their pills, they are clean and well feed, etc.

Una buena vecina es alguien al que contrata el ayuntamiento para que visite a gente de edad avanzada y controle que estén bien de salud, que se tomen la medicación, que estén limpios, que no les falte alimento, etc.

Janna is not a good neighbour. Nobody has hired her. One day she met Maudie in a Pharmacy and helps to come back home. Then she begins to visit almost every day and she begins to take care of her. Maudie is more than 90 years old and lives alone in a London basement, in dirty conditions, with her cat. Social workers want her to go to an old people home. The building where she lives must be demolished but Maudie are not going to surrender. She wants to live as until now. 

Janna no es una buena vecina. No la ha contratado nadie. Un día conoce a audie en una farmacia y la ayuda a llegar a su casa. Es entonces cuando empieza a visitarla casi a diario y se preocupa por ella. Maudie tiene más de 90 años y vive sola en un sótano londinense, en unas condiciones higiénicas terribles, con su gato. Las asistentes sociales quieren que vaya a una residencia de ancianos. El edificio donde vive tendrá que ser pronto derribado pero Maudie no está dispuesta a claudicar. Quiere seguir viviendo como hasta ahora.

Janna is an almost 50 years old woman. She has not children. Her mother and her husband died of cancer not much ago and Janna is aware of she has dedicated more hours to her work than to take care of her family. She consideres herself as a "wife-girl" and "daughter-girl" because, in spite of being an adult, she was not so mature and responsible as the familiar situation required in that moment. Nowadays Jana, who hadn’t taken care of her husband nor mother while they were ill, curiously begins to devote part of her time to an unknow old woman with a difficult character.

Janna es una mujer de casi 50 años. No tiene hijos. Su madre y su marido murieron no hace mucho de cáncer y Janna es consciente de que le ha dedicado más horas a su trabajo que a cuidar de su familia. Se considera a sí misma como "esposa-niña" y como "hija-niña" porque, a pesar de ser una adulta, no ha sido tan madura y responsable como requería su situación familiar. Ahora Janna, que no se ha ocupado de su marido ni de su madre mientras estaban enfermos, curiosamente empieza a dedicar parte de su tiempo a una anciana a la que no conoce y que tiene un carácter difícil.

All this new experience she writes in a diary where, even while the main subject is Maudie, we know also other characters from their lives. We read about their lives, memories from one and other and the working life of the other, we can see the progresive change in Janna’s priorities and how to meet Maudie has changed her life totally.

Toda esta nueva experiencia la plasma en un diario donde, aunque el tema central sea Maudie, conocemos también a otros personajes de la vida de ambas. Leemos sobre sus vidas, los recuerdos de una y la vida laboral de la otra, vemos el progresivo cambio en las prioridades de Janna y de cómo conocer a Maudie le cambia completamente la vida.
